Technical Literacy

Building the Types of Knowledge and Skills That Are Needed Today

Young people attending high school at the beginning of the twenty-first century need a much more comprehensive education than was required by any previous generation. This education must include development of a strong base of knowledge across many content domains as well as advanced skills in reading, writing, speaking, and computation.

Technical literacy is not just a prerequisite for success in college, but also for survival in many diverse real-world jobs. Many technician, trade, and service jobs now demand surprisingly high literacy levels to work adequately, to interact safely with colleagues, to stay up to date, or to obtain needed certification.
