Reading:

Determine the meaning of words and phrases in written material

  • Recognize the meaning of commonly used words
  • Determine the meaning of unfamiliar words with multiple meanings
    in the contexts in which they appear
  • Recognize the correct use of commonly misused words (e.g., their/there/they're)
  • Identify appropriate synonyms or antonyms for words

Recognize the main idea and supporting details in written materials

  • Identify the main idea of written material
  • Identify information, facts, and details that support, illustrate,
    or elaborate on the main idea
  • Identify an accurate summary, outline, or graphic representation of
    information presented in written material

Identify a writer's purpose, audience, point of view, and intended meaning

  • Recognize a writer's purpose for writing (e.g., to persuade, to describe)
  • Recognize the audience that the written material addresses
  • Determine a writer's opinion, intended meaning, or point of view by using
    the content, word choice, and phrasing of written material

Use critical reasoning skills to evaluate written material

  • Determine the relevance of specific facts or examples to a writer's argument
  • Recognize qualifying language

Apply knowledge of use of pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, and prepositional phrases in standard American English

  • Create a piece of written material employing the standard use of pronouns, including pronoun-antecedent agreement, pronoun cases, possessive pronouns, relative and demonstrative pronouns
  • Create a piece of written material employing the standard use of adverbs,
    adjectives, and prepositional phrases

Apply knowledge of the use of sentence structure and punctuation in standard American English

  • Identify and correct sentence fragments and run-on sentences
  • Identify and correct instances in which incorrect or extraneous punctuation
    has been used or necessary punctuation has been omitted.

Apply knowledge of the use of capitalization and spelling in standard American English

  • Identify the use of standard initial capitalization and standard capitalization with proper words and titles
  • Recognize standard spelling of commonly encountered words presented in context

Prepare a written response in an appropriate form on a given topic

  • Determine audience, purpose, and occasion
  • Prepare an outline or summary of the main ideas and essential points of a composition
  • Create a well-organized and well-developed composition, using appropriate and accurate vocabulary, mechanics, and grammar, according the conventions of standard American English
